Colorblind
Composed by Melanie Bradley
(Verse 1)
Another headline, another tear, another sign
That the same old story’s playing out on a different line
I see it on the streets, hear it in the halls
The whispers and the stares, the invisible walls
Dividing us by shades, a history of pain
Living in the land of sunshine and acid rain
We’re built on broken promises, on stolen ground
A heavy silence where a different sound should be found
‘Cause we’re all just humans, blood and bone and soul
Trying to find our footing and make ourselves whole
So take a look in the mirror, what do you see?
A heart that’s open, or a mind that’s not yet free?
Tear down the fences, let the bridges burn
Let’s find the compassion we were meant to learn
Don’t judge a book by the cover, a person by their skin
True beauty’s in the character, the goodness deep within
I see the sideways glances in the grocery store
The clutching of the purses when a certain face walks through the door
The jokes told in the shadows, the assumptions made
A lifetime of prejudice in a single masquerade
We talk about equality, but do we truly believe?
Or are we just putting on a show, with a trick up our sleeve?
It’s not enough to just say it, to nod and agree
You gotta live it out loud for the whole world to see
‘Cause we’re all just humans, blood and bone and soul
Trying to find our footing and make ourselves whole
So take a look in the mirror, what do you see?
A heart that’s open, or a mind that’s not yet free?
Tear down the fences, let the bridges burn
Let’s find the compassion we were meant to learn
Don’t judge a book by the cover, a person by their skin
True beauty’s in the character, the goodness deep within
It’s a conversation we’ve gotta start
Not just in our heads, but in our beating heart
And when you see a friend slip and say something wrong
Don’t let the ignorance linger on for long
Tell them with kindness, with courage and with grace
That love is for every person, every time, every place
So love your brother, love your sister, love your neighbor, love your friend
‘Cause judging by the color is a game that’s gotta end
Yeah, love your brother, love your sister, love your neighbor, love your friend
‘Cause judging by the color is a game that’s gotta end
