Paws and Pixels (followed by a Sweet Remembrance of Tibbers the cat)

On a chilly January 4, the gentle sound of purring filled the room, mixing with the soft glow of the television. Tree, a sleek Russian Blue with striking green eyes, curled up on the lap of his beloved owner, Shimmers. She sat on the couch in comfortable silence, staring blankly at the screen, the lively world of Fortnite glowing brightly before her. Despite the vibrant colors and frenetic action that danced across the screen, a heavy sadness lingered in the air, a gray cloud that had settled since her beloved Tibbers had passed away just two hours prior.

Tree sensed the sorrow wafting from her like a faint perfume, an ache he couldn’t ignore. He shifted a little closer, allowing his comforting warmth to wash over her. His purr grew louder, a rhythmic vibration intended to soothe her troubled heart. Shimmers glanced down, her eyes sparkling with unshed tears. “Oh, Tree,” she murmured, “I wish you could understand how much I miss Tibbers.”

Understanding wasn’t a barrier for Tree—he was a cat of action. Inspired by a sudden thought, he leapt off the couch and scuttled into the next room. Shimmers watched with curiosity as he returned moments later, dragging a small, colorful controller behind him, his own kitten-sized Xbox nestled in his paws. Tree’s version of gaming equipment seemed rather unconventional, but it was just right for a little hero wanting to help his best friend.

He nudged the small console into position beside the larger one and jumped onto the couch again, his green eyes gleaming with determination. Shimmers giggled, entertained by the sight of her furry companion trying to emulate the human experience. “You want to play with me, Tree?” she chuckled, trying to forget her sorrow. She picked up the kitty controller, cradling it gently in her hands.

Tree pawed the buttons on his controller, eliciting a delightful flurry of sounds from the TV. To his surprise, a character materialized on the screen, bearing a striking resemblance to himself—fluffy gray fur and sharp green eyes, ready to take on the world. Shimmers gasped, her smile returning as she saw Tree’s avatar dancing awkwardly, mimicking his every movement. “Look! You’re in the game!” she exclaimed, her voice laced with joy.

Together, they embarked on their adventure, navigating the thrilling world of Fortnite. Tree’s avatar blasted through obstacles, leaped from towers, and dodged imaginary bullets while Shimmers guided them with laughter and encouragement. Each successful dodge was met with triumphant purring from the real Tree, who felt exhilarated as if he were part of this grand game alongside his owner.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, the warmth of companionship seeped into the living room. With each victory and defeat in the virtual realm, Shimmers began to smile more freely, her laughter filling the space where sadness once lingered. Tree watched her, content that he was helping stitch the fabric of joy back into her heart.

But the game wasn’t just about winning; it became a canvas for expressing memories of Tibbers. “Remember when Tibbers would curl up next to us while we played?” Shimmers reminisced, her voice tender yet joyful. “He always insisted on being the center of attention.”

Tree’s ears perked up, and his purring intensified. In that moment, they shared a bond stronger than mere human and pet; they became co-conspirators in joy. They defeated enemies together and built forts, encapsulating their shared love for the past while welcoming the future.

The night rolled on, filled with laughter and the click of buttons—a tapestry woven from pixels and purrs. Just as they were about to win a tight match, Tree realized this game was more than pixels on a screen; it was a celebration of love, memory, and comfort.

As the final match concluded and the screen flashed “Victory Royale,” Shimmers erupted in joyous applause, her laughter ringing through the room like sweet music. Tree jumped up, prancing around as if he too had triumphed. In that jubilant moment, he knew that no matter how much they missed Tibbers, they had each other. Together, they would face tomorrow, paws and pixels united, ready for whatever the next adventure would bring.

In Memory of Tibbers the Cat

2020 to January 3 2025.

Note from Author: Tibbers the cat passed away in the night of January 3, 2025. Tibbers was a sweet striped cat who loved the great outdoors and loved walking his friend Shimmers around the yard. This story is in rememberance of Tibbers the cat and a little note to my readers: You never know when the last time you see someone is, the last time you hug, the last “i’ll see you later.” You never really know so never take things for granted and always respect each other. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson 22 years ago with a human best friend and now it is implanted in my mind to never leave things off on a bad note.
