Best type of Starter Pet for Children …

When you have children, chance are high, they will come to you and ask if they could get a pet. If your landlord allows pets then I personally don’t see why the child shouldn’t get a pet. However, I’m not saying you should just jump into first gear and get a dog. I think it would be a good idea to teach the child some responsibility before jumping out there and getting a dog. You should first teach them responsibility of caring for a pat before you go and get a new dog. So, let’s call it a starter pet. A starter pet isn’t just a pet you can go out, buy then toss it to the side, it doesn’t work like that. A starter pet is an animal that doesn’t require as much responsibility as a dog or a horse. Okay, so let’s get started and take a look at some ideas of the best start

1. Hamster

Hamsters are cute little beasts and I can remember my first hamster when. I was a kid, his name was brownie and as you guessed, he was a brown hamster. So yes, a hamster is a great idea as a starter pet for your child. Just teach your child how to feed the hamster and water it. Don’t forget to buy one of those cool hamster balls to put the hamster in.

2. Gerbal

Gerbals are cute little guys and are lot like hamsters. They do require love care, attention, food, water and a clean space to live and that is why I am recommending a gerbal for you. Cute little fluffy gerbals are a lot of fun to play with, which is a plus for the little ones.

3. Quaker Parrot (A Bird)

Quaker parrots are sweet little birds and I feel they would make a great first pet for a child. So, if you’re looking for a good pet that will be your child best friend, go for a bird.

3. Tarantula

Hey, why not go for a tarantula? I know, it’s creepy because oh my gosh, it’s a spider, but come on, why not get a tarantula? They aren’t poisonous or anything like that, so go ahead and get one for your child. You can go to the pet store together and pick out a cute little habitat for the tarantula with your child.

4. Cat

Meow, meow goes the cat when he/she is hungry. Cars are fine little creatures with a lot of happiness inside their little bodies – the happiness shines through in their purrs. If you have ever heard a cat purring, you know what I mean. When you have a cat, you can teach your child to not only feed him or her, but also, to empty the litter box. If you need some inspiration, take a look at my Facebook group page called Just Cattin’ Around – my readers are welcome to join the group and it will update on a routine basis as my cats are always cattin’ around, it seems.

5. A Dog

A dog would be a perfect pet for your child. So, once you feel your child has the intelligence and desire to care for a living creature, I don’t see a problem wit getting them a dog. A great place to get a dog would be the county animal shelter. In the Clay County animal shelter (that’s in Florida), I found the best dog ever – He was a Stafford Terrier named Troy – I changed his name to Chester Troy and he was one of the best dogs I have ever had. He passed away recently, on St. Patrick’s Day, of 2023, and I do miss him a lot.

So there you have it, your own list of good starter pets that you could get your child.
